2021 NEXUS Cup – a golf event with a big impact
On a picture-perfect afternoon, with the iconic Manhattan skyline in the background, the Palmetto Pirates captured the 2021 NEXUS Cup. The winning putt wrapped the second annual NEXUS Cup in dramatic fashion, fitting of the setting at Liberty National Golf Club.
“Every aspect of it was incredible. The pros were so nice to everybody; they were open, they were gracious, they gave their time. You’d be crazy if you didn’t do this tournament, it’s awesome” said a member of the championship team.
One of the most exclusive amateur team golf events in the country, the NEXUS Cup is a two-day golf and entertainment experience that makes an impact supporting youth through education. The team golf competition consisted of three matches followed by the championship shootout. The match play format provides a competitive setting while mixing in special guest appearances along the way.
Upon arrival by ferry to Liberty National Golf Club, the players were welcomed with a locker fit for a pro before receiving personalized stamped TaylorMade wedges on the range. The surprises continued once the competition began, and it wasn’t just the wood-fired pizza truck on-course, as players were greeted by major champions Henrik Stenson and Gary Woodland. Each team had to decide whether to have the pro to hit their tee shot from the championship tee or test their own skills from the forward tournament tee.
The intensity of the golf action picked up on day two, not only because of the pressure to earn a spot in the championship shootout but also because of the presence of recent PGA TOUR winners Tony Finau and Collin Morikawa. Both pros jumped into the team photographs and one lucky team received an exclusive breakfast strategy session courtesy of a live auction held on the prior evening.
The championship shootout had an added layer of pressure with the two PGA TOUR champions in the gallery to see who would deliver for their team and bring home the cup. With champagne spraying and cheers all around, the celebration by Palmetto Pirates showcased the excitement of being crowned NEXUS Cup champions at Liberty National.
While the golf and gifting experiences were dynamic, the live auction was equally impressive. Following a delectable four-course meal at NEXUS Club New York, several exclusive experiences were up for bid to benefit TGR Foundation. Items included a VIP trip to the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, a trip to Albany, Bahamas, a 2022 Super Bowl experience and the aforementioned breakfast with Finau and Morikawa. The entertainment during the NEXUS Cup dinner was as star studded as the auction featuring Michael Strahan interviewing Stenson, Woodland, Finau and Morikawa.
The 2021 NEXUS Cup was an unforgettable experience for all who participated. What makes the memories more significant is the impact of the event on youth. All proceeds from the event benefit students from under-resourced communities through TGR Foundation’s education programs.
“The support of this year’s NEXUS Cup is incredible,” NEXUS Cup host and TGR Foundation founder Tiger Woods said. “Thanks to all the players for being a part of the event along with my friends Michael, Henrik, Gary, Collin and Tony for supporting my foundation and our mission to empower students through education.”
